How a Beginner Learns to Meditate...Baby Steps

How  a beginner learns to meditate?...Baby steps

OH NO…meditate???  I can’t do that!!!  That is what I hear from most people when I offer my humble words of wisdom. Believe me; I was no different from anyone when I first began.  For me, meditation has turned in to a daily “practice” however it didn’t start that way.  It simply started by closing my eyes one day and taking one deep breath.  I just happened to be at a rock bottom moment in my life, so I was willing to try anything.  Now, I am grateful for that rock bottom moment because without meditation I would still be stuck, feeling disconnected from myself and the world around me.

It all starts with the desire to want more for yourself even if you don’t know what that “more” is or how you will get there.

You don’t have to jump in with both feet, just get your toes wet.  Start with 5 minutes one day, with no grand plan or promise of even the next day.  Give yourself absolutely no reason to get overwhelmed.  I know how daunting it can be to be alone with your thoughts and “meditate”.  But we can all close our eyes right?...right!  We can all take slow deep breaths in and out starting with just one.  Baby steps…

That is honestly all you need to know at the beginning.  You don’t even have to label it “meditation”, while for some, the very word makes them squirm and stop even before they start.  Michelle talks often about “Me time”.  You can take 5 minutes of that time to close your eyes and just breathe… slowly and deeply, in and out.  Call it, “my time to breathe”.  We fly through our day going from thought to thought, place to place, so often forgetting to breathe.

Another piece to remember, thoughts are part of meditation.  Your mind is going to wander.  Keep it simple and effortless, before you even start, think of your happy place.  If you don’t have one, or even that feels like a challenge, you can borrow one of mine ;).  For example, one of mine is on an empty beach sitting on the sand, at arm’s length from where the water slowly disappears into the sand.  It is early in the morning, so it is just cool enough that a light sweater is just right and the sun is just peaking through the morning clouds.  When you close your eyes, it is your very own personal and sacred canvas.  Hear the slight ripple of the waves on the shore and with each breath, take in the, ever so intoxicating ocean air that your memory will have ready and waiting for you. Make it everything that ignites all of your senses, therefore, so real that you are transported.

That is all… for now, just 3 easy steps.  Set your timer for 5 minutes.

  1. Pick your happy place and create it in your mind
  2. Close your eyes
  3. Slowly breathe in…and out.

If your mind starts to wander, as it often will, especially in the early stages of your journey to blissful meditation, come back to your place of joy and peace and breathe. That is the beauty of the mind.  As quickly as it can take you off track, with little direction, it can put you right back on.  This is the part of the mind that will become more expansive and accessible with time.  Just one day, five minutes and a choice to simply start.
